San Leandro Tenant Relocation Ordinance

The San Leandro City Council is one meeting away from approving a Tenant Relocation Ordinance that will require property owners to provide up to $7,000 in relocation assistance.

Tenants would be eligible to receive the relocation payment if their rent is increased more than 12% during a 12-month period and the tenant ends their lease. A property owner ending a tenant’s lease when selling the property or when moving a family member into the property will also trigger the relocation payment.

While single-family homes and condominiums would be exempt, all other rental properties including duplexes will be covered by the Ordinance.

The City Council will make a final decision on the Tenant Relocation Ordinance during their September 18 meeting. If you want to help convince the City Council that rental properties with four or fewer units should be exempt, please contact David Stark at: davids@bayeast.org
